Hydraulic hose in a system carries the pressurized liquid to linked components. It is flexible and allows the connection of components to the most desirable and efficient places in a circuit. The hose allows bridging across long distances, through tight areas, and will bend around corners.
Hydraulic hose consists of three layers, which maintain a steady flow of fluids, and handles the pressure it is subjected to while preventing abrasion and wear. The layers include;
Protective Outer Layer
This top layer is of rigid materials, which are resistant to abrasion, oil, water, and other environmental elements.
Reinforced Layer
It is the protective layer that covers the inner tube. It consists of one to several sheaths of wires, which are either coiled wound or braided, to protect the hose from tears.
Inner Tube
The inner tube is designed and made from synthetic rubber, thermoplastic, or PDFE. The hose design must be compatible with the application, which will allow low or high pressures.
Hydraulic Hose Compatibility
When there is the proper assembly of the hydraulic hose it performs flawlessly in the various applications. However, some practices that weaken the hose and reduce the lifespan such as;
- The use of a hose, above or below the standard temperatures, will lead to a system failure. A hydraulic hose has minimum and maximum temperature ratings, allowing it to function when exposed to external and internal temperatures. They are required to perform in their standard temperature ratings to reduce failure and to work longer.
- Hydraulic equipment will not operate effectively when the pressure is above maximum and with surges. The hoses have a recommended internal and external maximum and minimum pressure rating. When the hose’s pressures exceed these standards, it will result in failure and a short lifespan.
- In a hydraulic system, the assembly of incompatible fittings, intermixing hose types, while not following the manufacturer’s instructions reduce the hose’s performance. A hydraulic system requires a hose, compatible with the given application. The assembly requires hoses and other fittings that do not limit the operations and connections of the hydraulic system.
- A hydraulic hose can withstand kinking, abrading, pulling, and twisting. By matching the hosing with the contours of the hydraulic machine, and considering other barriers, it should fit snuggly without causing damage.
Types of Hose Construction
When selecting the ideal hydraulic hose for an application, then the reinforcement is an essential part to consider. The suction hose should be able to endure highly pressurized hydraulic liquid without failure. A good reinforcement can handle impact, impulse, and regular loading in hydraulic equipment. The most common types of reinforcements are;
Wire Spiral
The reinforcement design consists of a spiral wrap layer made of textile or wire materials. The spiral layers are parallel to one another and applied at a certain angle. The wires never cross over each other in a single layer, but multilevel layers of 2 -6 layers form a stronger hose. These types of hoses will increase their diameter and contract in length which makes them ideal in high-pressure loads.
Wire Braid
This type of hose has steel wires or textile material braided together to make a firm and flexible reinforcement layer. The wire braid’s hose is ideal for high-pressure, while the textile braids are for low-pressure applications. Although the braided hose is flexible, it is unsuitable in ultra high-pressure applications as it will expand in diameter and shorten in length. These make the braids to rub onto each other, wear out, resulting in weakening and failure.
Helical Wrap
This wrap is a helical coil of monofilament and designed for hoses that require enhanced impulse load resistance. It prevents the hose from collapsing when exposed to suction pressure.
